2025 African Youth Games: Team Kenya bags 2 bronze in karate

The Kenyan Karate Team has secured two podium finishes in the ongoing African Youth Games in Luanda, Angola.

In a statement on its X page on Friday, December 12, 2025, Kenya won two bronze medals courtesy of fine performances from both the male and female karate disciplines.

The male team gave a dedicated performance to bring home the first bronze on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

Under the leadership of coach Anthony Fondoh, the budding charges built on the impressive form to secure a second bronze in the Individual Female Kumite -59kg, courtesy of Margrate Nyevu.

Other than the Karate team, Kenya is represented by the U16 Beach Handball National Team, the swimming team, weightlifting, and the Kenyan Judokas for the Judo games.

The swimming games come with increased incentives for Kenya as the team of young swimmers seeks qualification for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

Grace Kingori, the swimming team manager for Team Kenya, shared her excitement and gratitude:

“The team is in high spirits and ready to compete. We appreciate the National Olympic Committee of Kenya and, even more so, the Government of Kenya for fully sponsoring this trip. That support means everything to these young athletes. We also appreciate our stakeholders and everyone back home who has sent goodwill messages. Their encouragement has lifted the team and strengthened their resolve.” She said before the team’s departure.

In the boxing category, Kenya will be represented by five boxers in Angola, with four of them from Kibera Youth Club.

The crew is led by 17-year-old Scovia Atieno, a member of Korumba Boxing Club in Nyalenda in Kisumu, has taken Kenya’s boxing scene by storm, beating older opponents than her to clinch the national novices and intermediate light-welterweight title.

Angola is hosting the 4th African Youth Games as part of its celebration for its 50 years of independence. The event unites young athletes from across the continent, competing across 33 sports
