2 nabbed as AK-47 stolen from Mombasa cop is recovered
A joint operation by detectives from Jomvu and Mikindani Police Station has led to the arrest of two persons of interest linked to a robbery in Mombasa, resulting in the recovery of a stolen AK-47. The detectives said the weapon had been forcibly taken from a police officer, triggering an intense manhunt across the county.
In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) explained that the suspects were apprehended after a tip-off and careful coordination with local officers.
“Detectives from Jomvu, alongside officers from Mikindani Police Station, have arrested two notorious suspects linked to a violent robbery, recovering an AK-47 rifle that was brazenly snatched from a police officer in the heart of Mombasa County,” the DCI stated.
Authorities revealed that the robbery occurred on March 14, 2026, in the Maganda area, prompting immediate action to track down the perpetrators and retrieve the stolen firearm. The DCI said the investigation quickly focused on two key individuals who were linked to being central to the heist.

“The robbery, which occurred on March 14, 2026, in the Maganda area, sparked a relentless manhunt by officers. Acting on a hot tip-off, the officers launched a precision raid in Bangladesh, focusing on 2 persons of interest,” the statement added.
During the operation, officers encountered resistance when confronting one person of interest, who attempted to escape before being caught.
“As the officers stormed their hideout, they announced their presence with authority, but he didn’t budge. Instead, the person of interest made a desperate bid for freedom by trying to escape, prompting the officers to give chase and subsequently arrest him,” the DCI confirmed.
Following questioning, the person of interest led officers to a second hideout in Narcol, where his accomplice was apprehended hiding in the ceiling.
“During questioning, the person of interest led officers to a second hideout in Narcol area belonging to his accomplice. Upon arrival, officers discovered another person of interest, lurking like a rat in the ceiling; he was swiftly apprehended,” the DCI statement said.
The raid yielded the stolen AK-47, hidden with 30 rounds of ammunition, confirming it was the same firearm taken from the officer.
“As the officers turned the place upside down, they uncovered the AK-47 assault rifle, Serial No. 5426917, cleverly concealed in a sack on the ceiling, along with thirty (30) rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. It was a startling recovery, with records confirming that this was indeed the same weapon wrenched from the hands of a police officer during that fateful robbery,” the DCI added.
The persons of interest are now in custody at Mikindani Police Station and await arraignment, while the hunt continues for other accomplices believed to be part of the criminal network.
“The three persons of interest were later escorted to Mikindani Police Station, where they now find themselves on the wrong side of the law, awaiting processing before facing the full force of the law. Meanwhile, Officers are hot on the trail of additional persons of interest believed to be part of this nefarious crew, who are believed to have participated in the robbery,” the statement concluded.
