Two men have been arrested in Kisumu after police recovered weapons and items believed to be used in criminal activities, following a tip-off from members of the public. The arrests were made by officers from Obunga Police Station during an operation carried out along the Kisumu–Kakamega Road.

In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, police said the persons of interest were intercepted at a railway crossing while allegedly preparing to commit a crime in the area.

The operation was launched after residents raised an alarm over suspicious movements near the busy road, prompting swift action by officers on patrol. Police say public cooperation played a key role in stopping the suspects before any harm was caused, highlighting the importance of community vigilance in maintaining security within Kisumu City.

In a statement explaining how the arrest unfolded, the National Police Service said officers acted on credible intelligence from the public.

“Acting on information from the public, officers from Obunga Police Station conducted an operation at the railway crossing along the Kisumu-Kakamega Road and arrested two individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities,” the statement reads.

Following the arrest, officers carried out a search on the suspects, leading to the recovery of several items believed to be tools commonly used in robberies and attacks. The police say the nature of the items raised serious concerns about the suspects’ intentions.

Detailing what was recovered during the operation, the National Police Service disclosed the weapons and tools found in the suspects’ possession.

“The duo were found in possession of a machete, a knife, a pair of pliers, several bunches of keys, and a length of wire believed to be intended for use as a garotte,” the statement reads.

After the recovery, persons of interest were immediately taken into custody as investigations began. Police say the arrest was necessary to prevent possible attacks and to allow officers to establish whether the suspects are linked to other crimes reported in Kisumu and surrounding areas. Giving an update on the suspects’ status, the police confirmed that the law will now take its course.

“They were escorted to the station and placed in custody, pending processing and arraignment in court,” part of the NPS statement reads.

The NPS also acknowledged the role played by residents and officers in ensuring the operation was successful. Police say such cooperation helps keep communities safe and reduces crime before it happens.

“The National Police Service commends the public and the officers involved for their quick response,” the statement reads.
