Two people have been arrested in an operation that led to the confiscation of bhang worth Ksh13.5 million.

In a statement on Thursday, July 31, 2025, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that the two have been transferred to their headquarters for processing ahead of their arraignment before a court.

“Anti-narcotics unit (ANU) detectives have apprehended two traffickers and confiscated 450 kilograms of cannabis sativa valued at approximately Sh13.5 million,” DCI stated.

450Kgs of bhang

According to the sleuths, the two were nabbed along the Naivasha-Nairobi highway as they were travelling in a private vehicle with at least 450 kilogrammes of bhang.

DCI states that the drug was concealed in gunny bags and 11 bales, and that they were ready for distribution in the Nairobi market.

“Acting on a tip-off, detectives intercepted a Toyota Noah (registration number KBH 226U) driven by Bonface Mandende Zinjenga, accompanied by John Oloo Amolo, near the Delamere shop along the Naivasha-Nairobi highway,” a statement by the DCI reads in part.

“The suspects, along with the motor vehicle, were escorted to Naivasha police station, where the vehicle was found to contain eight gunny bags and eleven bales of Bhang weighing 450 kgs, all concealed and ready for distribution.”

“The suspects and the motor vehicle were later escorted to DCI headquarters for further processing ahead of their court appearance,” the statement reads.

Drug bust

This comes just a day after police officers in Mombasa recovered stolen property and seized illegal substances in separate operations, underscoring the importance of community collaboration and intelligence-led policing.

During the operation, officers recovered a range of items suspected to have been stolen in previous incidents. The recovered items included two television sets, a coffee maker, a laptop, gas cylinders, a jungle bag, and multiple identification cards.

Additionally, 38 rolls of a substance suspected to be cannabis (bhang) were seized at the scene. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the raid and are currently in custody, pending arraignment in court.

On July 27, 2025, two people were arrested with over a hundred rolls of bhang in Kieni East Sub-County.

“During the operation, two individuals were arrested after being found in possession of 114 rolls of a substance suspected to be cannabis (bhang). Both suspects are currently in custody awaiting arraignment in court. This operation highlights the commitment of the National Police Service to ridding our communities of illegal drugs, as authorities continue to target any person or entity involved in the production, distribution, or use of narcotics,” DCI said at the time.
