12 more people have lost their lives in the last 48 hours pushing the death toll from El Nino floods to 154, the government has announced.

More than half a million people have also been displaced, up from 472,000 recorded last Friday.

In a statement on Monday, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura warned that the rainfall is expected to continue over the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin, South-Eastern lowlands and the Coast.

However, North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya are likely to be generally dry.

“Isolated storms and heavy rainfall are likely to occur over some parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin and the South-Eastern lowlands: which is likely to lead to further flooding,” the government warned.

The rains have also rendered some roads impassable with Mwaura pledging government efforts to restore the damaged parts.

“Moyale-Dabel-Buna-Eldas-Griftu-Wajir (A14) road is partially impassable at the Dela, Korrondile and Buna sections. Equipment have been mobilized to carry out improvement works, repair cut-off sections and to assist vehicles stuck in the mud,” he said.

He added: “About 2 kms of the Madogo-Cheredende-Bilbil-Bura-Nola road at Dukanotu is submerged. Temporary diversions have been created to provide alternative routes.”

Other roads affected include the Garsen-Witu-Lamu road which is partially impassable and sections of Thika-Mwingi-Garissa road.

“The government through Kenya National Highways Authority Kenya Rural Roads Authority and Kenya Urban Roads Authority will commence immediate reprocessing and graveling of all affected roads once the floods subside,” he added.

Further, the government announced more rescue and medical interventions in the affected areas.

“We continue to emphasize the importance of staying vigilant and following safety guidelines. We urge wananchi to be updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety, particularly in flood-prone regions,” Mwaura remarked.

Floods wreak havoc in Voi

Earlier, at least four people were killed and several others reported missing after the Voi River in Taita Taveta County burst its banks on Monday morning.

In a statement, Kenya Red Cross said rescue efforts are underway after the river broke its banks causing flood in villages within Voi Town.

“The Kenya Red Cross is on-site, conducting search and rescue operations for families marooned by the rising waters,” Kenya Red Cross said.
