11 casualties reported in West Pokot rockfall during informal mining activities

Rescue operations are ongoing following a rockfall incident at Rumos Hills in West Pokot County where community members were engaged in informal gold mining activities.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed on their X post that rescue efforts are still underway, with concerns raised that more people could be trapped underground after sounds were reportedly heard from beneath the collapsed site.

So far, 11 people have been reported injured, with three in critical condition and referred to Kapenguria Referral Hospital for specialised treatment. First responders from the Kenya Red Cross are working alongside local authorities and community members in the ongoing operation.

Rescue efforts at Rumos Hills

The incident occurred at a mining site in Rumos Hills where informal gold extraction was taking place. Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of individuals who may still be trapped as operations continue under challenging conditions.
