Nairobi ward leaders are split down the middle over whether to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja or not when the County Assembly resumes sittings next week.

Some of the city MCAs who spoke to People Daily revealed plans to impeach Sakaja are in progress.

They say they will discuss the grounds of impeaching the first-term governor when they will resume sittings next Thursday.

“The debate about his impeachment is really gaining momentum. Most of the MCAs have common complaints about the governor. The governor is only paying pending bills to his close associates. He no longer even picks our calls,” said Kayole Central MCA Jeremiah Themendu.

Kileleshwa’s Robert Alai who has been leading the push accused Sakaja of incompetence, corruption and abuse of office.

He dismissed claims the governor has been receiving protection from senior figures in government and the opposition, adding that it was Sakaja creating that impression to scare MCAs.

“There is no protection the governor is receiving… That is just an assumption. It has taken too long for the impeachment motion to come but I am finalising on it. It will be ready next week,” Alai said.

Firm ground

Deputy Minority leader and Nairobi South MCA Waithera Chege said her colleagues have enough reasons to impeach the governor.

“I haven’t seen the impeachment motion but if it comes, there are already enough grounds for the governor to be impeached according to the Constitution. I have always made my stand clear the governor should be put to task to work for Nairobians,” Waithera said.

But Minority leader Anthony Kiragu, however, defended Sakaja, saying he was innocent.

“It is not official yet whether there is an impeachment motion. I have not seen the grounds of impeachment and I do not know the sponsor of the motion yet. This is the mid-term curse at City Hall. If you recall during the times of (Evans) Kidero and (Mike) Sonko, it was also around this time that their impeachment motions came. So it is something that we are used to. It was also around this time that Nairobi Metropolitan Service was brought into the county,” he said.
