Kisumu is, for the first time, gearing up to host this year’s UN World Tourism Day next week.

“Hosting the UN World Tourism Day is a significant event and will likely bring a lot of attention to the city,’’ said Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o (pictured).

The city will host events from September 23 to 27, which organisers say will provide a great platform to display Kisumu’s tourism potential and its unique cultural and natural attractions. The world will mark the day on September 27.

“It is also an excellent opportunity for local businesses and the community to engage with international visitors and stakeholders,’’ he said.

This year’s theme is ‘Tourism and Peace’, which highlights how tourism can be a powerful tool for fostering harmony and development.

Nyong’o said tourism that emphasises sustainability and responsible travel can help preserve cultural and natural heritage. “This is crucial for maintaining peaceful coexistence between human activities and the environment,’’ he said.

People-to-people connections or personal interactions between tourists and locals can create lasting friendships and personal connections that transcend political or cultural differences.

Beautiful landscapes

With Kisumu’s rich cultural heritage, beautiful landscapes, and vibrant tourist attractions, the city is sure to make a strong impression and is set to host the UN tourism event.

County Minister for Tourism and Marketing, Farida Salim, said it is a great opportunity for the city to strengthen its position as a key player in the global tourism industry. “The event will not only shine a spotlight on Kisumu but also potentially boost local tourism and economic growth,’’ she said.

Salim told the Business hub it would be a memorable and enriching experience to visit Kisumu next week for the tourism excursion event and cross-cultural bonanza.

The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife invited 47 county governments to submit bids and Kisumu won.
