Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has defended President William Ruto from more criticism after incorporating some members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in his new proposed cabinet.

Ngunyi has wondered what more critics can ask for after the Head of State conceded more ground following numerous demands by a restless Gen Z.

Ngunyi recalled how ODM worked with the government of the day when the opposition outfit joined Mwai Kibaki’s Party of National Unity (PNU) following the disputed elections of 2007 to form a broad-based cabinet.

“When ODM joined the government in 2008, they created Vision 2030. They changed our country. But Ruto told us that there is no space for Raila in his government.

“Now he has climbed down again. What more do we want from Ruto? A pint of blood? He is undergoing character development,” Ngunyi said in a post on X on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

From ODM, John Mbadi, who has been nominated as the National Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary, is among those expected to serve in the next government after vetting by parliament.

Opiyo Wandayi has been nominated as CS Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, as Hassan Joho is the CS designate for the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.

Former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has been proposed as Ministry of Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development.

Ruto’s take

After naming his second batch of CS nominees, Ruto appreciated the willingness of other sectors to work with him and deliver for the country.

“I commend the leadership of diverse organisations, both in the public and private sectors, including political parties, for their encouraging response to my outreach to consult on forming a broad-based government.

“Their willingness to set aside partisan positions and interests in order to join a visionary partnership for the radical transformation of Kenya is a historic gesture of their patriotism.

“I take this opportunity to express my appreciation of their commitment and reiterate my pledge to engage, alongside them, in a national conversation that is inclusive, citizen-centred and aimed at consolidating and accelerating the actualisation of inclusive growth and national transformation,” Ruto said.

As some support his choice of the new cabinet, critics who are opposed to it are expected to keep poking holes in the move.
