Several elders from Mt Kenya East have endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their preferred political kingpin.
In a statement, the elders from Njuri Njeke in Tharaka Nithi expressed concern over rising political tensions in the region, emphasizing the need to focus on development and unity.
They praised President William Ruto’s efforts but stressed the importance of fulfilling election promises, including improving farmers’ livelihoods and addressing youth unemployment.
The elders believe Kindiki’s political moderation and national stature will strengthen Mt Kenya East’s distinct identity and link to the National government.
Reflecting on the promises made during the economic forums in the region prior to the 2022 elections, the elders reiterated their commitment to holding the government accountable for delivering on key issues affecting the region.
Growth and prosperity
These issues they said include improving the livelihoods of farmers, addressing youth unemployment, and completing development projects that were promised during the campaign. “While we recognise the president’s efforts to bring growth and prosperity, we are concerned about the raising political tension,” the elders said.
By endorsing Kindiki as kingpin, the elders hope to establish him as a vital link between their region and the national government.
Kindiki’s political moderation and national stature are seen as key assets in advancing the economic and social priorities of Mt Kenya East.
The endorsement further solidifies Mt Kenya East’s push for a distinct political identity, as the region seeks greater autonomy from the traditional leadership of Mt Kenya West.
This growing divide between Mt Kenya East and West is likely to shape the political future of the region, with Kindiki now positioned as a rising force in the national political arena.
