In a significant political move, elders from the Mt. Kenya East region — which includes Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi counties — have thrown their weight behind Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their preferred political leader, signalling a shift in regional leadership dynamics.

This endorsement effectively sidesteps Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has been considered the dominant figure in the larger Mt. Kenya region.

The elders in a joint statement in Embu town that was read by Cyrus Ngeranwa and Mbiti Ruguongo from Njuri Njeke in Tharaka, expressed their deep concerns over the current political climate in Mt Kenya region saying the tension was distracting them from important issues touching on development.

While they appreciated President William Ruto’s efforts to appoint leaders from Mt. Kenya East to key government positions, including three Cabinet Secretaries, the elders emphasized the need for continued focus on development and national unity, rather than engaging in divisive political rhetoric.

Reflecting on the promises made during the economic forums in the region prior to the 2022 elections, the elders reiterated their commitment to holding the government accountable for delivering on key issues affecting the region.

These issues they said include improving the livelihoods of farmers, addressing youth unemployment, and completing development projects that were promised during the campaign.

“While we recognize the president’s efforts to bring growth and prosperity, we are concerned about the rising political tension,” the elders said.

By endorsing Kindiki as their point person, the elders hope to establish him as a vital link between their region and the national government.

Kindiki’s political moderation and national stature are seen as key assets in advancing the economic and social priorities of Mt. Kenya East.

This move is also viewed as a challenge to Gachagua’s more divisive, ethnic-based approach to politics, which has caused some friction within the broader Mt. Kenya region.

The endorsement further solidifies Mt. Kenya East’s push for a distinct political identity, as the region seeks greater autonomy from the traditional leadership of Mt. Kenya West.

This growing divide between Mt. Kenya East and West is likely to shape the political future of the region, with Kindiki now positioned as a rising force in the national political arena.

The elders endorsement comes barley a week after elected members of Parliament from the Mt Kenya East endorsed Kindiki.
