Tourism Cabinet Secretary (CS) nominee Rebecca Miano has revealed plans to revamp the airbnb industry in Kenya.
Speaking when she appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments for vetting on Saturday, August 3, 2024, Miano stated that if her nomination is approved by parliament, she will ramp up efforts to stabilise the industry which she says has been marred by insecurity and untidiness.
The CS nominee noted that the industry has been lagging and, thus failed to be at par with other successful businesses worldwide due to the rampant cases of insecurity.
Miano assured the committee that under her helm, the space which she believes is a classic example of an industry overtaken by its growth, will match world standards and record remarkable changes.
“My view is that the case of Airbnbs is a classic example where an industry is overtaken by the growth of the industry and I will not hesitate to say, because we have research institutions, research organisations dealing with tourism, they must be on top of the game with what’s happening; the contemporary changes so that as a country we keep up, we foresee, we prepare ourselves,” Miano said.
“When I look at the airbnbs, we are lagging behind as a country, as a region, we are trying to capture voi and manoeuvre issues that come up and therefore that being the case.”

Miano vowed to partner with other ministries to revamp the industry and restore its glory effectively.
“If approved I will make ensure that this is a priority so that with consultation with other arms of government, other ministries with a stake on this we finalise the strategy, regulations, any legislative and policy agenda that is required so that we tidy up that space that is currently untidy getting into security issues and all manner of things,” she added.
