The upcoming Champions League clash between Kenyan champions Gor Mahia and South Sudanese side El-Merreikh has been scheduled for Sunday, August 25.

The match will be hosted at Nyayo Stadium and is set to kick off at 3:00 p.m. The league leaders will also provide live coverage of the game.

Gor Mahia keen to advance

Gor Mahia will be eager to turn the tables and advance to the second round of the competition after suffering a 1-0 defeat in the first leg.

The match took place at Juba Stadium on Sunday, August 18, 2024, where El-Merreikh secured a narrow victory thanks to a goal from Mohamed Musa.

Throughout the match, Gor Mahia looked the more threatening side, with new signing Enock Morrison coming close to breaking the deadlock early on. Morrison’s appeal for a penalty was dismissed, and shortly after, Levin Odhiambo had a chance but missed the target.

In the 27th minute, Gor Mahia won a corner, but despite Alpha Onyango’s efforts from a rebound, the ball was headed wide. The home goalkeeper played a crucial role by stopping a well-taken shot from Onyango at the hour mark.

Despite continuous pressure and several attacks from Gor Mahia, El-Merreikh capitalized on a defensive error in the 67th minute. Mohamed Musa seized the opportunity to score, giving the South Sudanese side a decisive advantage.

Gor Mahia’s Shariff Musa came close to levelling the score, heading over the bar from a close-range chance.

Gor Mahia miss

Additionally, Samuel Kapen, a recent signing from Nairobi City Stars, missed a final-minute opportunity, further denying Gor Mahia a crucial away goal.

In the qualifying rounds, each tie is played on a home-and-away two-legged basis. If the aggregate score is tied after the second leg, the away goals rule is applied, and if still tied, extra time is not played, and a penalty shoot-out is used to determine the winner.

The winner of this tie will take on Al Ahly in the next round.
