A man has been arraigned before a Mombasa court charged with the theft of Sh1.4 million.

Steve Marvin Njagi (pictured) was charged with breaking into a car and stealing the amount.

The offence was allegedly committed at Naivas, Likoni parking lot on June 6. Njagi, according to the charge sheet, broke into a Nissan x-Trail motor vehicle, registration number KDJ 505H, and stole a total of Sh1,450,000.

Police claim Njagi is part of a notorious gang that has been breaking into cars in Mombasa and surrounding areas.

His arrest followed a meticulously planned operation by detectives from DCI Lang’ata, who tracked Njagi to his hideout in Nairobi.

Vehicle prowling

Njagi’s arrest comes amid a broader crackdown on vehicle prowling, a crime that has plagued many urban centers in Kenya.

Vehicle prowling, or theft from motor vehicles, remains a significant concern for law enforcement and citizens alike, with criminals often taking advantage of unsecured vehicles and valuable items left inside.

To curb these risks, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures.

“Install anti-theft devices, and always park in safe, well-lit, and fully visible areas. Before you park your car, make sure to remove or hide anything that a thief might find attractive. Also, remember to close your car windows and doors, lock your car, and take your keys with you,” said DCI in a statement.
