Tips to lower your electricity bills without sacrificing your festive comfort

By , December 24, 2025

Kenya Power customers who pay monthly electricity bills have been raising concerns over high charges.

However, there are ways you can enjoy your festive seasons with comfort by maximising usage while taking control of the amount accrued.

Use these tips to save on your electricity bills:

Switch to energy-saving bulbs

Although energy-saving bulbs may cost more to buy at first, they use much less electricity and last much longer than ordinary bulbs, which reduces power bills and replacement costs over time, making them cheaper in the long run; therefore, everyone is encouraged to use energy-saving bulbs for lighting.

Switch off appliances entirely

Switching off electrical appliances completely when they are not in use helps to save electricity because many appliances continue to consume power even when left on standby.

This reduces unnecessary energy wastage, lowers monthly electricity bills, and extends the lifespan of appliances by preventing continuous power flow that can cause wear and overheating.

In addition, it improves safety by reducing the risk of electrical faults or fires and contributes to environmental conservation by lowering overall energy demand.

It is worth noting that when buying new appliances, consumers should check the power rating, which indicates how much energy they will consume. Often, appliances with lower energy ratings cost more initially but save money in the long run.

For households away from home for extended periods, such as one to three months, switch off fridges and deep freezers completely, especially if they are empty.

However, when at home, these appliances should remain running, as they are designed to self-regulate energy consumption.

Automated lighting systems

Automated lighting systems help save electricity by ensuring that lights are only switched on when they are needed and turned off automatically when spaces are unoccupied or when there is sufficient natural light.

This reduces energy wastage caused by human forgetfulness, lowers electricity bills, and improves efficiency, especially in offices, schools, and public buildings.

Additionally, automated lighting enhances convenience and extends the lifespan of lighting fixtures, while supporting environmental conservation through reduced energy consumption.

Several electrical appliances, such as fridges and most household appliances, operate most efficiently when used optimally.

For example, a refrigerator works more efficiently when it is fully loaded. Empty spaces in the fridge still need to be cooled, which increases power consumption.

This is the reason why fridges and deep freezers come in different sizes, allowing you to choose one that suits your household’s needs.

If a fridge is almost empty or half-packed, it will waste energy cooling the air inside.

However, if it is adequately packed, it can maintain the cold for more extended periods, reducing energy consumption.
