The rise of smart appliances comes as urban Kenyans navigate increasingly demanding schedules. With long work hours, side hustles, and family responsibilities, technology is playing a growing role in household management. Smart kitchens are emerging as practical solutions to save time and energy.
Modern appliances, connected through Wi-Fi and controlled via smartphone apps, are becoming common in middle-class estates and growing suburbs. For example, a refrigerator can send a notification when milk runs low, while a cooker can automatically adjust heat levels to perfect a dish like ugali. These tools help households better coordinate daily routines, allowing residents to focus on family, work, or rest.
Energy efficiency is also a driving factor. AI-powered fridges and induction cookers are helping to reduce electricity usage, a key consideration for budget-conscious households.
Some devices come with built-in power monitors that recommend optimal settings to lower consumption. In regions such as Kisumu, where solar energy is increasingly adopted, smart kitchens are being integrated with renewable energy systems.
