KCB RFC 7s head coach Andrew Amonde is upbeat as his team prepares for the Kabeberi 7s, the fourth leg of the National Sevens Circuit, set for this weekend in Nairobi.
Despite a challenging performance at the Dala 7s in Kisumu, where KCB finished fifth, Amonde remains hopeful.
KCB’s campaign at Dala 7s ended with a 31-0 victory over Nondescripts but was marred by a 12-5 loss to Kenya Harlequins in the main cup quarterfinals.
They bounced back in the fifth playoff semi-final with a 29-10 win over Nakuru RFC.
“Unfortunately we did not defend our title in Dala but big lessons for these boys,” noted Amonde.
He emphasized the need to respect opponents and adjust strategies, noting that the return of Vincent Onyala will bolster the team’s dynamic, dding, “We will keep on building in the remaining legs, the margins are not that bad.”
He acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, citing areas of improvement in defense and attacking strategies.
Despite these challenges, he believes KCB still has a chance to secure the overall championship. “I know that mathematically, we can still win the overall crown and that remains our greatest target,” he stated.
KCB showed strong early form by winning all three pool matches, but their performance in the knockout stages highlighted the need for further refinement.
The return of Olympians Samuel Asati, Vincent Onyala and Festus Shiasi is expected to provide a significant boost in pace and experience for the upcoming Kabeberi 7s.
Following Kabeberi 7s, the National Sevens Circuit will take a one-week break before resuming with the Driftwood 7s on September 7-8.
The circuit will conclude with the Prinsloo Sevens at Nakuru Athletic Club o
