On Saturday, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo made headlines after conspicuously missing at Raila Odinga’s ODM National Delegates Convention (NDC) at the Kasarani gymnasium.

Kalonzo’s absenteeism from Raila’s big day raised queries about his readiness to work with the ODM leader ahead of the August general elections.

Days after making a no-show at the weekend’s event, the Wiper leader came out to explain that his absence was premised on a legal agreement they signed in 2017.

Speaking to reporters outside his office in Karen, Nairobi, Kalonzo said he signed an agreement with the former prime minister to see the latter support his presidential bid in the coming elections. He argued that attending the ODM NDC, where Raila was endorsed by his party delegates as their flag bearer, would have breached their agreement.

“Attending the ODM NDC in which Raila was named a presidential flag bearer could have been on my part considered a breach of the agreement,” Kalonzo said.

The Wiper leader further accused Prof Makau Mutua of breaching the same agreement by attending the ODM’s NDC. He said that Prof Mutua is a depository of the agreement hence should not have been at the NDC and endorsed Raila’s presidency.

Though Kalonzo missed the ODM’s NDC, he was represented by the Wiper National Chairman Ambassador Chirau Ali Mwakwere.
