Renown businessman and Kakamega Homeboyz owner Cleophas Shimanyula’s father is dead.
The businessman also known as Toto lost his father Godfrey Levi Shimanyula on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.
The death of Shimanyula’s father was announced by Kakamega governor Fernandes Barasa, who works closely with Toto in county tenders.
I have learnt with deep sorrow, of the death of Mr. Godfrey Levi Shimanyula of Emusonga community area, Shieywe ward of Lurambi Sub-County. He was the father of Mr. Cleophas Shimanyula, a prominent businessman in Kakamega County,” Governor Barasa announced.
Shimanyula’s achievements
The County boss in his statement heaped praises on the deceased, acknowledging his various achievements in life.
Governor Barasa noted that the late was a prolific Kiswahili writer who wrote novels like ‘Fedheha ya Fedha’ that was released in 1981, among other books.
“Mr. Shimanyula was a prolific writer whose literary oeuvre includes novels like; ‘Fedheha ya Fedha‘ of 1981, ‘Mikosi ya Heri‘ and ‘Mbegu za Chuki‘.
“Mr Shimanyula was also among the pioneer mechanics who established garages in Kakamega town. His sense of enterprise and self-belief inspired many youths to venture into technical and mechanical vocations,” Barasa said.
He went ahead to note that many businessmen and businesswomen in Kakamega town have created jobs for the youth by following the deceased’s example.
The governor conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of his support during the difficult time.

Cleophas Shimanyula’s controversies
Cleophas Shimanyula is a controversial Kakamega businessman who works with the county government of Kakamega as a contractor.
In January 2024, Shimanyula was embroiled in a war of mouth with Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale after he accused him of killing his farm worker and blaming it on his fighter bull, Inasio.
In 2019, Shimanyula was in the limelight after his bus christened Homeboyz killed over 55 people in a grisly accident at Fort Tenan in Kericho County.
Cleophas Shimanyula is arguably one of the richest men in Kakamega county with investments in sports, transport, real estate, construction and other sectors of the economy.
Shimanyula is the founder and chairman of Kakamega Homeboyz football club, one of the teams playing in the Kenya Premier League (KPL).
In the transport sector, he owns a fleet of buses under the Homeboyz brand and Western Cross Express Company.
Shimanyula worked at his father’s garage for four years in the 1990s before he purchased a saloon car and ventured into the taxi business in Kakamega town, which was then the provincial headquarters of Western Province.
