Mining Cabinet Secretary (CS) nominee Hassan Ali Joho has vowed to improve the lives of Kenyans if his nomination is approved by parliament.

Speaking when he appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments on Sunday, August 4, 2024, Joho assured the committee that he will prioritise Kenyans when employing the workforce in his ministry.

The former Mombasa governor also assured the house that he will implement robust measures to realign policies to cater to the needs of Kenyans and create employment opportunities for young Kenyans.

He particularly informed the Moses Wetang’ula-led committee that he will explore avenues such as deep sea fishing, and sponsor the youth so they can venture into the business which he says is a game changer.

“We need to sponsor them for deep sea fishing, that would be the game changer, there should be no stalled projects, we must develop plans that work. We will have a conversation and have a clear plan to embark on stalled projects,” Joho explained.

He assured the committee that his vast experience as a businessman in the private sector makes him suitable to run the ministry.

“I have a lot of experience in matters governance and transformational always of doing business in government. The record speaks for itself. If I am approved, I will hit the ground running and it shall not be business as usual. We need to realign policies that conform to the needs of our people.”

Joho also shed light on his academic credentials and how he acquired his two degrees, he explained that he managed to do a bridging course in the year 2006, which enabled him to enroll for a diploma course in 2007 despite scoring a D – (minus) in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) which he sat for at Serani Secondary School in Mombasa.

“The administration of Uhuru Kenyatta had quite some issues with me, there were those who felt that they had an opportunity to permanently remove me from the political equation by dealing with my educational credentials. There is no government institution that has not investigated my credentials. I commit before this house that if you nominate me and I do well, the next vetting you should see a PhD,” he said.

The former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Deputy Party Leader also noted that he was able to enroll for a degree course at Kampala International University, and graduated in the year 2013 after acquiring his diploma.

He later enrolled for his second degree at Gretsa University in Thika, Kiambu County and graduated with a degree in Commerce in 2016.
