The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has called on the public to offer information they have that could be helpful in the probe into the death of Rex Kanyike Masai.

Masai died on Tuesday during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests that rocked Nairobi, and the oversight authority now wants the help of the public as they investigate the circumstances that led to that death.

“IPOA calls upon anybody who may have witnessed the fatal shooting of Mr. Rex Masai on June 20, 2024, to come forth and volunteer information to advance its investigations.

“Your volunteerism will help to bring closure to the family and friends but also contribute to police accountability,” IPOA said in a statement on X posted on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

IPOA’s probe into Masai’s death comes as the police come under immense pressure, especially on how they handle the people taking part in the controversial proposed law.

Police under scrutiny

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is among various entities that have called out the police and stressed the need to fully investigate Masai’s death.

“The Law Society has been consistent in our resolve to stamp out impunity within our police, and we have no intention of relenting.

“We have taken note of all reports that we have received on what occurred leading to the murder of Rex Kanyike Masai and all other overzealous force against the protesters,” LSK said in a statement.

Gathoni Wamuchomba, a Githunguri Member of Parliament, has also added her voice to the death of the protestor.

“My deepest condolences are with the family and loved ones of the fallen hero of this moment, Rex Kanyike Masai, and others who have put their lives at risk.

“May his death not break your determination but rather give you the resolve to put things right. Life is a risk; taking a risk is courage; if you win, you’ll be happy; if you lose, you will be wise.

“Your generation has thrown a challenge at us parents, and constitutionally, you have your space to make things right in a peaceful manner,” Wamuchomba said in a statement on X.

The police are expected to be under heavier scrutiny next week as the organizers of the protests have warned of more actions. The Finance Bill 2024 will be tabled in the National Assembly for the third reading on Tuesday after 204 MPs, against 115, gave it a nod in the previous session.
