Why United Opposition wants to change its name to United Alternative Govt

By , March 5, 2026

In the recent past, leaders of the United Opposition have been calling for a change of their movement’s name, proposing that it be renamed the United Alternative Government.

The shift has already begun to reflect in their speeches, with principals increasingly embracing the new identity as they attempt to depart from their older label of “United Opposition”.

However, many Kenyans are still struggling to understand why the coalition would change a name it has been known by since its inception.

The push for the rebranding has largely been driven by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who is also a convener of the coalition.

While speaking during a church service in Mathioya on Sunday, February 1, 2026, Kalonzo revealed that he had received a message from Saitabao Ole Kanchory, the 2022 presidential chief agent of Raila Odinga.

According to Kalonzo, Kanchory advised that retaining the name “United Opposition” creates the perception that they are comfortable remaining in opposition and are not serious about winning next year’s elections.

It is from this advice that Kalonzo began popularising the “United Alternative Government” rallying call as their new trademark ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“Kusema United Opposition, ni kama kukubali mnakaa tu hapo opposition. So, we are the United Alternative Government. That is who we are.”

Komboa Kenya

In December, he had also proposed a raft of changes within the coalition, suggesting that the movement be dubbed Komboa Kenya, arguing that its primary mission is to solve the issues bedevilling Kenyans.

He further called for the coalition to announce its presidential flag bearer as early as the first quarter of 2026 to avoid unnecessary uncertainty.

United Opposition retreat

Later, Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa stated during an interview on Thursday, January 29, 2026, that coalition principals were scheduled to meet on February 12, 2026, for a two-day retreat.

During that meeting, they were expected to settle on the coalition’s official name and agree on the metric to be used in identifying their presidential flag bearer.

These developments come at a time when there are growing indications of a possible merger between the United Alternative Government and the Linda Mwananchi team led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. The talks signal the possibility of a future alliance aimed at actualising their shared goal of making President William Ruto a one-term president.

Reason for uniting

Speaking in a recent television interview, Why Linda Mwananchi’s next political move could be United Opposition, Sifuna stated that for President William Ruto to be defeated in next year’s election, there must be an overwhelming repudiation from Kenyans.

He emphasised that this can only be achieved if all like-minded individuals approach the election as a united front.

He committed to the fact that he will not be part of any vote-splitting plan and assured Kenyans that he will not let them down in their quest for change.

At the same time, he urged the United Opposition to continue with its endeavours, noting that their political paths could intersect at some point.

Earlier, the former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua had also hinted at the possibility of an alliance with the Sifuna-led team.

He stated that just as leaders within their formation are expressing interest in the flagbearer position, should the Linda Mwananchi team present a formidable candidate capable of carrying the movement’s aspirations, they would all rally behind that person.

He even mentioned Siaya Governor James Orengo as an example of a leader they could collectively support for the top seat.
