What to do if you are not placed by KUCCPS

By , July 9, 2026

Missing out on a university or college placement through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) is not the end of the road. Education experts say candidates who have not secured placement still have several options that could help them join higher learning institutions or pursue alternative career pathways.

The latest KUCCPS placement exercise has once again highlighted the intense competition for some programmes, particularly degree courses such as medicine, engineering and other high-demand disciplines.

While thousands of students successfully secured placements, others were either not placed in their preferred courses or missed out altogether due to various reasons.

First confirm your placement status

Before assuming you have not been placed, students are advised to log into the official KUCCPS student portal using their KCSE index number, examination year and password to verify their placement status.

Candidates should rely only on the official KUCCPS website and avoid unofficial links or individuals claiming they can alter placement results for a fee.

After confirming placement, successful applicants are required to download admission details directly from their assigned university or college, as KUCCPS does not issue admission letters.

Wait for KUCCPS revision opportunities

Students who remain unplaced should monitor KUCCPS announcements closely. The placement agency has in previous admission cycles opened revision or application windows to allow candidates to apply for programmes with available vacancies after the initial placement exercise.

Such opportunities enable applicants to compete for remaining slots in universities, TVET institutions, diploma and certificate programmes.

Consider inter-university transfers

For students who secured placement but are dissatisfied with their assigned institution or programme, the government has extended the inter-university transfer window from two weeks to one month.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the extension is intended to give learners adequate time to review their placements and make informed decisions about changing institutions or courses.

The transfer process is conducted through the KUCCPS portal after placement results are released.

Explore TVET and other career pathways

Education stakeholders continue to encourage students to embrace Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), noting that diploma, certificate and artisan programmes provide practical skills that are increasingly in demand in the job market.

KUCCPS placed 293,869 students into degree, diploma, craft certificate and artisan programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year, reflecting the government’s push to diversify higher education opportunities.

The Commission also revised its placement criteria this year by removing some programme barriers, reviewing subject clusters and expanding opportunities for students pursuing technical subjects.

Apply for higher education funding

Students who secure placement should also apply immediately for government funding through the Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal and HELB to avoid delays in processing financial support before reporting to their institutions.

Education officials have urged learners to submit funding applications as early as possible after placement confirmation.

Don’t fall victim to fraudsters

Parents and students have also been cautioned against paying brokers or fraudsters promising to influence KUCCPS placement results or secure admissions into preferred universities.

The Commission maintains that placement is strictly based on merit, course choices, KCSE performance and institutional capacity.

For candidates who missed placement this year, patience remains key. Fresh application windows, transfer opportunities and alternative academic pathways continue to provide viable options toward achieving higher education goals, proving that one placement outcome does not determine a student’s future.
