By , November 30, 2025

As the festive season fast approaches, Kenya’s roads experience increased traffic as families travel upcountry, friends gather for celebrations, and holiday events fill the calendar, including Christmas and New Year celebrations.

With this surge in movement comes a heightened risk of road accidents, as families move from cities to their rural homes (Ushago). However, many of the road accidents can be prevented through responsible driving and proper planning.

During this season of festivities, the National Police Service (NPS) has also vowed to work with relevant authorities to reduce fatal accidents on Kenyan roads.

To ensure you and your loved ones arrive safely at your destinations, here are five essential safe-driving tips to keep in mind this festive season.

Life-saving tips

Avoid driving under the influence

The festive season is often marked by parties and social gatherings where alcohol is served. While enjoying responsibly is part of the celebrations, getting behind the wheel after drinking remains one of the leading causes of fatal accidents.

If you plan to drink, designate a sober driver, request a cab, or arrange alternative transport. No celebration is worth risking your life or that of others.

Stick to speed limits and drive defensively

Excitement, long distances, or the rush to arrive early can tempt drivers to speed, but speeding drastically reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.

Stick to posted speed limits, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and be extra cautious in areas with heavy traffic or poor visibility.

Conduct a vehicle safety check

Before embarking on any long trip, ensure your vehicle is in good working condition. Check tyre pressure, brakes, engine oil, lights, wipers, and coolant levels.

A well-maintained car is less likely to stall or cause avoidable accidents. If you’re unsure about your vehicle’s condition, consider visiting a mechanic for a quick inspection.

Minimise distractions while driving

Phone calls, text messages, loud music, conversations in the car, or even adjusting navigation systems can significantly distract a driver.

During this busy season, when roads are busy and unpredictable, your attention is your greatest asset. Put your phone away, set your GPS before starting the journey, and keep distractions to a minimum to stay focused throughout.

Rest well and avoid fatigue

Fatigue is often overlooked as a major cause of road accidents, especially during long-distance holiday travel. Driving while tired reduces concentration and slows reflexes, similar to being under the influence of alcohol.

Rest adequately before travelling, take breaks along the way, and if you feel sleepy, stop immediately. Sharing driving duties can also reduce fatigue during long trips.

By observing the above safe driving tips, chances are high that many road accidents could be avoided, thus saving lives in this season of festivities.
