Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has lauded Kenyan journalists for their resilience and commitment to truth, as the country marked World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2026.

In a statement on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Kalonzo commended members of the media for standing firm in defence of the public’s right to information, even under pressure and intimidation.

“On this World Press Freedom Day, we celebrate and honour the men and women of the media who stand firm in defence of truth and the voice of the people,” Kalonzo said.

Closure of some stations

The former vice president singled out the media’s coverage during the 2024 Gen Z protests, describing it as a demonstration of bravery in the face of adversity.

He said that despite government directives to shut down major media houses, journalists continued to inform the public. Kalonzo referenced stations which he said faced closure threats but remained steadfast in their reporting.

“To all journalists and media practitioners across Kenya, thank you for your courage and resilience. Thank you for telling the stories that matter, even in the face of risk and intimidation. We saw your bravery during the Gen Z protests of 2024. Even when the government ordered the closure simply informing the public, you remained steadfast,” Kalonzo said.

Freedom of expression

He further underscored constitutional protections under Article 34 of the Constitution of Kenya and Article 33 of the Constitution of Kenya, noting that these provisions guarantee media freedom and freedom of expression.

“Protected under Article 34 on media freedom and Article 33 on freedom of expression, you have stood firm, refusing to be silenced, and continuing to hold the line for truth and accountability,” Kalonzo noted.

Media ahead of 2027 polls

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also noted that press freedom in Kenya has improved over the years, attributing the gains to persistent efforts by journalists and media stakeholders.

He urged journalists to remain attentive to citizens’ concerns and ensure balanced reporting as political temperatures rise ahead of the next general election.

“Here in Kenya, Press Freedom has come a long way. You fought to earn it. Do not let your guard down, especially now that Kenyans are yearning for change. Listen to Kenyans and tell their stories. The Future of Kenyans need to be at peace, especially ahead of the 10th August 2027 General Election,” Gachagua said.
