Wiper summons Kitui county Speaker for grilling over meetings with UDA

By , June 17, 2025

Embattled Kitui County Assembly Speaker Kevin Kinengo faces sanctions from the Wiper Democratic Party over his blatant declaration to work and partner with the Kenya Kwanza administration in a campaign to support President William Ruto’s re-election bid.

The party has written a Show Cause letter to the Speaker to explain or justify his conduct, which is viewed to violate the party’s policies and its constitution by associating with the UDA party.

During two rallies presided over by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki at Zombe market and Ithookwe in Kitui East and Kitui Central, respectively, last week, Kinengo publicly purportedly declared he will fully and unconditionally support the President as he does development in Kitui county for the benefit of our people.

In the June 13, 2025, letter signed by the Wiper’s disciplinary committee deputy chairman, Mutinda Mutuku, the Speaker is accused of violating the party’s constitution by joining DP’s convoys in the county and his utterances, which are viewed not only to demean and the party but also its leader, Kalonzo Musyoka.

He has 14 days from the date the letter was written to respond.

Reached for comment on June 16, 2025:

“I confirm receipt of the Show Cause letter and I will respond to it accordingly. I went to the State House to meet the HE. William Ruto in his capacity as the President of Kenya and not in his capacity as UDA party leader. I have been attending the empowerment programs since they are not UDA programmes but government programmes,” Kinengo said when reached for comment, adding that he was not cleared or nominated by Wiper and therefore, my position is an MCA decision since the Wiper-sponsored former Speaker, George Ndotto, was their candidate.

“I have been supporting Wiper since I am a party member, but the party has no power to summon me as the Speaker,” he added.
