Wetang’ula warns leaders against tribal politics ahead of 2027 polls

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged Kenyan leaders to rise above tribalism and prioritise the nation’s interests over personal ambitions.

Speaking on Friday, September 19, 2025, during an empowerment program in Teso South Constituency, Busia County, Wetang’ula emphasised that true leadership is measured by the ability to unite the country and champion the common good rather than individual or ethnic interests.

“During the event, I reiterated my call on leaders to shun tribal politics, noting that their thirst for power should not drive them into dividing the country on tribal lines,” Wetang’ula said, emphasising that political manoeuvring fueled by ethnicity undermines national unity and progress.

He stressed that the temptation to use tribal loyalties as a pathway to power often comes at the expense of the people, creating divisions that persist long after elections. For Wetang’ula, the need for leaders to prioritise Kenya’s cohesion is urgent, particularly as the country navigates critical socio-economic and political challenges.

Elsewhere, a section of Kenya Kwanza leaders led by Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa have slammed former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua over tribal politics.

Support for Ruto

Beyond the warnings against tribal politics, Wetang’ula expressed support for President Ruto, noting that the current leadership deserves continuity to fulfil its promises to the electorate.

“I also reaffirmed that President Ruto deserved a Second term to deliver his manifesto to the people of Kenya,” he said. His statement underscores a commitment to policy delivery and the belief that ongoing initiatives require consistent leadership to succeed.

The National Assembly Speaker also highlighted the government’s efforts to empower citizens economically, particularly through initiatives aimed at enhancing capacity for business ventures. “I commend the ongoing government-initiated empowerment programme enhancing capacity for business ventures and urge Wananchi to ignore critics who are pouring cold water on the programme,” Wetang’ula said. He encouraged residents to focus on tangible benefits rather than being swayed by negative rhetoric surrounding government projects.

His remarks come amid a broader national conversation on political conduct and citizen empowerment, reminding leaders and the public alike that sustainable development depends on inclusive governance, ethical leadership, and the rejection of divisive politics.

By blending calls for national unity with advocacy for development-focused governance, Wetang’ula sought to leave a message that transcends partisanship. His address resonated with attendees, many of whom acknowledged the importance of prioritising the country’s well-being over narrow political gains.
