National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has pleaded with Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa to ditch the opposition and join the government.

While speaking during the funeral of former councillor Johnstone Barasa in Kiminini on Saturday, January 24, 2026, the Speaker urged the former Defence CS to join the government so that the Mulembe community can have a united front ahead of 2027.

The Ford Kenya leader told Wamalwa that since he, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya are on the same side, he too should join them in the quest for the Mulembe unity they have long dreamed of.

He further emphasised that it is Eugene who should join their side and not vice versa so that they can have a stronger united front that will enable them to bargain harder and more effectively.

“Eugene, I agree. Let’s unite. I have talked with Oparanya, I have talked with Musalia, and if you look at how we are, Musalia, Oparanya, and I are on one side, and that is why you should come to where we are so that we can build a huge team so that we can bargain harder and better,” he said.

He added that the door is open for Wamalwa to enter, and that if it means opening the door for him, then he will personally open it.

“The door is open, my brother; if it means opening the door for you, I will do so.”

Wetang’ula, who in the past has opened up about plans to vie for the presidency, told Eugene Wamalwa that if in the future Wamalwa appears to have higher chances of winning the presidency than him, he will shelve his ambition to support him, and if it goes the other way round, he will expect nothing less from Wamalwa than his support.

Wamalwa opposing govt

The DAP-K boss, who in recent times has been directing sharp criticism at the state and opposing its agenda for the people, has sworn never to work with the president or join the Kenya Kwanza government.

He also revealed that there was a time when a Defence Cabinet Secretary position was offered to him, but he refused to take it, saying there is no way he can sit down and work with Ruto.

This also comes after Wetang’ula hinted at plans by himself, Musalia Mudavadi, and Wycliffe Oparanya to form a joint party aimed at delivering votes for President William Ruto from the Western region and rallying the region behind the President, who is seeking a second term.
