Wanjigi: Ruto would defeat Kalonzo hands down if they face off in 2027

Businessman and politician Jimi Wanjigi has stirred fresh debate in Kenya’s succession politics after predicting that President William Ruto would comfortably defeat Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka in a direct presidential contest in 2027.

Wanjigi, who was speaking during an interview with a local radio station which aired on YouTube on Sunday, June 21, 2026, argued that political momentum, messaging and national appeal would heavily favour Ruto in a head-to-head race against Kalonzo, whom he described as lacking sufficient electoral “sell beyond coalition politics”.

“If it is President William Ruto against Kalonzo on the ballot, Ruto will win hands down,” Wanjigi said.

He further claimed that opposition narratives built around “one-term” slogans may not be enough to sway voters across the country.

“Wantam has a limit, because people don’t know what is beyond one term,” he added, referring to growing opposition rhetoric calling for Ruto’s ouster in 2027.

Wanjigi urged political actors seeking to challenge Ruto to develop broader, more unifying political messaging instead of relying on anti-incumbency slogans.

“Sell beyond wantam and you have a greater unifying factor,” he said.

His remarks appear to suggest that Kenya’s 2027 election will be shaped not just by opposition sentiment but by the strength of alternative policy messaging and coalition-building capacity.

Kalonzo’s political influence

Wanjigi also questioned Kalonzo’s political influence and long-term relevance in Kenya’s opposition politics.

He revisited his political history with Kalonzo and Raila Odinga, recalling their cooperation during the 2017 election cycle, when they jointly backed Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

However, he said Kalonzo’s political trajectory since then has raised serious questions about his leadership capacity.

Despite acknowledging their past cooperation, Wanjigi argued that Kalonzo has not demonstrated independent political strength or built a firm support base outside Raila Odinga’s influence.

Political implications

Kalonzo remains a key figure in ongoing opposition realignment discussions ahead of the next general election.

He has previously been positioned as a potential consensus candidate within opposition formations, although negotiations on joint strategy and leadership structure are still ongoing.

Kalonzo recently launched his 2027 presidential campaign platform, signalling a major step in the opposition’s efforts to unseat Ruto in the next General Election.

Wanjigi’s prediction adds a new layer to the debate over whether opposition unity alone would be sufficient to challenge Ruto’s re-election bid or whether a more expansive political strategy is required.

Rising pre-election political temperatures

As the 2027 election cycle gradually takes shape, political leaders have increasingly used public platforms to assess rival strengths and test possible electoral matchups.

Wanjigi’s remarks come amid intensifying political positioning across both government and opposition camps, with alliances, endorsements and messaging strategies already beginning to take shape.

The statement is expected to fuel further debate on Kenya’s evolving political landscape and the likely dynamics of the 2027 presidential race.
