The political supremacy battle pitting the former Governor Wycliffe Wangamati and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula came to the fore on Saturday, September 27, 2025, after youths shouting pro-Wetangula slogans heckled the former from addressing the mourners convened at the Sanandiki Primary, Kabuchai Constituency.

Hell broke loose moments after Mutaki Simiyu, the Chwele Ward MCA and staunch supporter of Ford Kenya, took the stage and forewarned politicians present against speaking ill of the Ford Kenya supremo.

“If you are here as a politician, when you rise to the podium, sell your policies without speaking on Papa Wa Roma,” he stated.

The declaration proved a recipe for disaster as the former governor was heckled by the angry youths when he took the podium to address the mourners.

Chants of Weta, Weta rented the air as the youth approached the dais before snatching the microphone from the politician.

“I have come here to mourn my friends…,” the ex-governor stated before seeing the microphone whisked away from him.

Clergy vanishes

The bitter clash with youth had the burial proceedings end abruptly, with the clergy presiding over the function leaving in haste.

The clash comes days after Wangamati sustained his onslaught on the National Assembly Speaker, dismissing his declaration that he intends to vie for the presidency in 2032.

Meanwhile, Wangamati also dismissed Tim Wanyonyi’s Bungoma gubernatorial bid, arguing that the county cannot be turned into a monarchy dominated by the Wetang’ula family.

Speaking on Sunday, September 21, 2025,Wangamati warned the county against electing Wanyonyi as the third governor of the region.

“Come 2027, if the people of Bungoma want meaningful development, then the Wetangula family and Ford Kenya must go. I have worked with these people; I know them.”

Mmeona juzi tena ile madharau ambayo Wetangula ako nayo anatuletea ndugu yake ati asimame ugavana hapa Bungoma. We are saying clearly that we as Bungoma people maneno ya kingdom, maneno ya monarchy, maneno ya project ya Ford Kenya hatutaki hapa Bungoma,” Wangamati said.

The foregoing comes as the gubernatorial race in the county heats up. Wangamati, the county’s second governor, is set to battle it out against Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa and Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, who are the three front-runners for the county’s top job.
