Wanga: Upcoming Kisumu rally to showcase ODM’s preparedness for 2027
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has intensified preparations for the 2027 general election with plans for a major political rally at Kirembe Grounds in Kisumu on May 31, as party leaders rally supporters to unite behind the movement ahead of the next election cycle.
Speaking during a press briefing on May 28, ODM national chairperson and Homa Bay governor Gladys Wanga said the gathering will provide the party leadership with an opportunity to engage directly with supporters and grassroots members across the region.
“We intend to speak with our people, hear from our people and engage vigorously with our grassroots as we continue building the largest party,” Wanga said.
She noted that the rally will also mark the beginning of ODM’s early preparations for the 2027 elections, adding that the party intends to move together with its supporters as it charts its future political direction.
The meeting agenda
According to Wanga, leaders attending the event will address issues affecting residents, including infrastructure development, agriculture, devolution and compensation for victims affected by post-election violence in the region.
“This region has borne the brunt of post-election violence and chaos. We will be updating our people on the progress made regarding compensation,” she said.
Wanga further said ODM remains committed to championing people-centred policies that directly address the needs of ordinary Kenyans, especially in regions that have historically supported the party.
She noted that the party leadership would continue pushing for better healthcare services, youth empowerment programmes and economic opportunities aimed at improving livelihoods across the country.
She also urged ODM supporters to remain united and avoid divisive politics, saying the strength of the party lies in its grassroots support and commitment to democratic ideals.
Upcoming rally
According to Wanga, the upcoming Kisumu rally will serve as a platform for renewing the party’s vision and reaffirming its connection with supporters ahead of the 2027 general election.
The ODM chairperson described the event as a peaceful political carnival and called on party officials, supporters and leaders from across the country to attend.

“All roads will lead to Kirembe Grounds on Sunday, May 31. We are welcoming everyone to Kisumu,” she added.
At the same time, Governor Wanga condoled with families, friends and the school community of Hutumishi Academy following the death of several students in a tragedy reported on Thursday morning.
“It is indeed sad to lose such young lives in such a tragedy. We stand together as a nation during this time of mourning and grief,” she said.
Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko, who chairs the organising committee for the event, said preparations for the rally were complete following consultations with the Luo Council of Elders and ODM leaders from across the Nyanza region.
Ayacko said the elders had resolved that the Luo community should remain united under ODM leadership while also supporting structured engagements with like-minded political formations, including the ruling UDA party.
“The elders have spoken clearly that this community must remain united and continue strengthening ODM as a party. We are also committed to engaging other Kenyans and like-minded political formations in structured discussions as we head towards 2027,” said Ayacko.
He stated that the rally, dubbed “Kisumu Wabiiro”, will bring together ODM supporters and leaders from Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya and Kisii counties.
According to the governor, supporters travelling from different regions will assemble at designated points, including Katito, Kondele and Holo, before converging at Kirembe Grounds at noon.
Ayacko described ODM as Kenya’s oldest and largest political party, saying its contribution to the country’s democratic journey remains significant.
“The history of multiparty democracy in Kenya cannot be written without ODM occupying most of the chapters,” he said.
He emphasised that ODM was founded on democratic ideals and inclusivity, not political hostility.
“ODM is not a party driven by hate against any individual or political formation. We believe in dialogue, discussions and peaceful engagement with all Kenyans,” he added.
Kisumu Central MP
Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron also defended the absence of some county leaders during the press briefing, explaining that many leaders were currently engaged in budget-making processes and other official duties.

He confirmed that Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, who is currently in South Africa, was aware of the preparations and would join the activities upon his return.
Oron assured residents and supporters that adequate security and logistical arrangements had been put in place to guarantee a peaceful event.
“This is an ODM affair, and everybody who loves ODM is welcome. Whether you come by bicycle, boda boda, tractor or on foot, you are all invited to attend this rally,” said Oron.
The MP described the gathering as an important political moment for the region as leaders begin shaping conversations towards the 2027 elections.
