Wamuchomba urges Mt Kenya to shun tribal hatred ahead of 2027 polls

By , February 7, 2026

Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has issued a passionate appeal to the Mt Kenya region to reject tribal hatred and internal divisions as the country edges closer to the 2027 general elections.

In a lengthy statement shared via her official social media accounts on Saturday, February 7, 2026, Wamuchomba warned that growing hostility among leaders and citizens from the region risks weakening its political influence and reviving painful memories of past election-related violence.

“Mlima, Let us accept that we live in a Kenya that other communities occupy and that our numbers can be a political tool to bargain or a weapon to demolish. A tool to ensure that we get into a bargain with whoever is in power. Without entitlement, we can respectfully negotiate without blackmail,” Wamuchomba’s statement reads in part.

Uhuru-Ruto pact

Wamuchomba reflected on historical political arrangements, citing the 2009 agreement between retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and President William Ruto that laid the groundwork for their 2013 electoral pact.

She noted that the understanding, which involved a 10-year political support arrangement, is nearing completion.

She credited Uhuru with stabilising the country during a volatile period and described him as a key political anchor for the Mt Kenya region at the time.

However, the legislator expressed deep concern that the region is now facing internal strife rather than external political pressure, with leaders publicly attacking one another, even at funerals and places of worship.

“President Uhuru did so in 2009 and agreed to have President Ruto support him into the presidency in 2013. They agreed on 10:10-year support pact. We are almost there in to fulfilling it. Uhuru managed to stabilize a country that was on the verge of anarchy. He became our true kingpin,” she stated.

“We are now at our worst times, where our differences aren’t external; they are internal, where leaders from our community are attacking each other in every forum, including in solemn events like funerals and sacred places such churches. Infact, other communities are laughing at us as we tear each other out. We have broken the records and mutilated the very fabric that we swore not to. Hatred has become our currency.”

Role of social media

She also criticised the role of social media and some local radio stations, accusing them of amplifying hatred, misinformation, and propaganda that harm families, businesses, and careers.

Drawing from her experience in the media during the lead-up to the 2007–2008 post-election violence and the subsequent International Criminal Court cases, Wamuchomba warned against repeating history.

“Every social media page is full of hatred and whining. Our local radio stations are amplifying hate, malice and propaganda, bringing down homes, businesses and careers. Gossip and fake news are trending. I was in the media space in 1998, 2003 towards 2007 I know what I know. The HAGUE debacle wasn’t fun. We all said DONT BE VAGUE, GO TO HAGUE. We regretted,” Wamuchomba wrote.

Support for Ruto

Wamuchomba further said she has made a deliberate decision to allow President William Ruto to govern in peace while continuing to remind him of his responsibility as a steward of the nation.

She stressed that her support is not driven by political survival but by a desire to promote stability and coexistence.

“I have made a conscious decision to allow President Ruto to govern in peace. Reminding him of responsibility as a steward of the country and help him recover the lost trusts and achievements. This is not a guarantee of a future political score, for politics is not a do or die affair for me,” she stated.
