Wambugu: Stepping aside shields Gachagua from political defeat

By , September 10, 2025

Former Nyeri Town MP Wambugu Ngunjiri has weighed in on the withdrawal of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) from the Mbeere North by-election, describing the move as a win-win situation for the leader.

In a statement shared on his socials on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, following DCP’s decision to step aside in favour of the Democratic Party (DP), which will now field a candidate in the race.

According to Wambugu, Gachagua stands to benefit regardless of the election outcome.

In the event that the opposition secures victory, the former Deputy President will be seen as having played a major role in that success, thus strengthening his political influence.

On the other hand, if the opposition loses, he can distance his party from the defeat by attributing it to other constituent parties in opposition, such as the DP, Wiper, or DAPK, shielding DCP from any political damage.

“But this is also a win-win for Gachagua. If the opposition wins, Gachagua will run away with the larger part of that victory. If they lose, he will claim it’s DP, Wiper or DAPK that lost, not his new party. Smart!” Ngunjiri stated.

DCP’s withdrawal

This comes moments after DCP officially withdrew from the Mbeere North by-election.

During a presser at the party headquarters read by the party leader and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, they announced that they have decided to take a step back and instead support the Justin Muturi-led DP party, which has fielded a candidate in the upcoming by-election.

The party leader stated that the reason behind this move is that the slot was previously held by the Democratic Party and that the party had requested that they retain it for the party’s candidate to complete a full term.

The party leader continued to state that they have also accepted to support the Wiper party in the Muguni ward by-election. He further added that in Bungoma, they have decided to support the Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) in the Chwele Kabuchai ward by-election.
