Wambugu Ngunjiri mocks Gachagua’s call for calm after impeachment ruling

Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Wambugu Ngunjiri has laughed off former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s recent appeal to his supporters to remain calm ahead of the High Court ruling on his impeachment case.

The former legislator, who is a known critic of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader, took a swipe at Gachagua through a statement shared on his social media pages on Monday, June 8, 2026.

According to Ngunjiri, Gachagua’s message urging his supporters to remain calm was merely an attempt at managing public perception. He argued that if the court ruling goes against Gachagua and no one reacts, the former deputy president will later claim that it was his call for calm that prevented any unrest.

“The message below is optics management. Now, when no one reacts to a bad verdict, he will say he is the one who instructed the community to be calm.  “The same way he says he is the one who tells people to receive Ruto when he comes to the Mt – because he knows if he told them not to, they still would come out, and he wants it to look like he’s the one instructing the numbers coming out,” Wambugu stated.

Ngunjiri further stated that Gachagua often claims responsibility for the crowds that turn up to welcome President William Ruto during his visits to the Mt Kenya region. He argued that even if Gachagua were to discourage residents from attending such events, they would still show up, but he wants it to appear as though he controls the numbers attending the president’s functions.

The former MP also claimed that Gachagua has always felt betrayed by his supporters because no demonstrations were held when he was impeached from office. According to Ngunjiri, Gachagua believes the lack of public protests sent a message that he was not important enough for people to take to the streets in his defence.

Ngunjiri went on to state that if Gachagua truly believes he is being denied justice, he should openly call for peaceful demonstrations and see whether anyone would turn up to support him. He sarcastically suggested that such a move would reveal the true extent of the former deputy president’s influence among his supporters.

This also comes moments after Ngunjiri Wambugu stated that if the alternative to President William Ruto is Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, then he would rather vote for the latter.

“If you tell me you are replacing Gachagua with Ruto, I will vote for Ruto. Because Gachagua, at this moment in time, is much worse than Ruto. Kama ‘Wantam’ ni Gachagua; wacha Ruto afanye ‘Tutam’, Wambugu said.
