By , January 29, 2026

Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has announced that the United Opposition will hold a two-day retreat starting Thursday, February 12, 2025, with coining their coalition’s name being on top of the agenda.

Speaking on Thursday, January 29, 2026, during an interview with a local radio station, Wamalwa said the retreat will be a critical political moment for the coalition, where leaders will lay down coalition structures, establish committees, strengthen the coalition’s brand, and officially coin the coalition’s name.

During this high-level 2-day retreat, they will also agree on the political framework and criteria to guide the selection of their presidential flagbearer, who will challenge President William Ruto in 2027.

He further revealed that the United Opposition will embark on a nationwide regional mobilisation campaign, moving from region to region to sensitise Kenyans, especially the youth to register as voters, so that each Kenyan participates in bringing change to the nation

“As a coalition, we are going for a retreat on February 12 and 13 to set our structures, form our committees, agree on the name of our coalition, and settle on the formula for picking our flag bearer”

On the timeline for choosing their presidential flag bearer, Eugene Wamalwa said the decision will be made six months before the general election.

He explained that at that time, the coalition would select one candidate among the six principals, after which the remaining leaders would rally behind the chosen candidate to face President William Ruto at the polls.

“Our pick for a presidential flag bearer will take shape six months before the General Election. We will only choose a candidate that Kenyans want, one who has no corruption-related cases, no blood on his hands, and no questionable character, and who must also have a proven track record.”

According to Wamalwa, the United Opposition intends to deliver a paradigm shift in Kenyan politics.

He explained that their flag bearer will be a candidate without court battles, corruption-related charges, or any grey areas in their political career, something he said will clearly distinguish them from past elections and their political opponents. Kalonzo Musyoka, a key figure within the United Opposition had suggested that they name their presidential candidate within the first quarter of 2026. Something that the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua came to dispute.

Rebranding United Opposition

This comes days after Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also announced plans to rebrand the United Opposition as ‘Komboa Kenya’ since, according to him, the coalition has come in to salvage Kenya from the current regime, which he believes is oppressive and does not care about the atrocities that Kenyans have gone through.

This also comes at a time when the United Opposition is being blamed for spending more time in boardrooms and meetings rather than engaging the local populace on the ground.
