Wamalwa: Ruto is planning to revive the Justice Ministry to appoint me as a CS

Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has claimed that there are plans by President William Ruto to revive the Justice Ministry so that he can be appointed as Cabinet Secretary for the slot.

Speaking on a local radio station on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the former Defence Cabinet Secretary, who has recently faced speculation that he may abandon the opposition and join the government, stated that the President is trying to lure him with a ministerial position so that he can join the government and support him in the 2027 General Election.

Wamalwa said he cannot be tempted by any ministerial position, noting that he has served in Cabinet for over 10 years.

He added that he has previously served in the Justice Ministry, explaining that before the 2010 Constitution was breathed into life, he was the one who oversaw its implementation and promulgation.

“There are plans to create the Justice Ministry for me to be appointed to the docket. I have already served as Justice Minister in the past—in fact, I was the last Justice Minister. It was under my leadership that the 2010 Constitution was implemented,” Wamalwa said.

He further stated that he has held several ministerial positions, including the Ministry of Water and Devolution, and later the Ministry of Defence, before exiting government in 2022.

Wamalwa emphasized that he is not interested in any government position, adding that the only office he is interested in is the presidency.

He also claimed that Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is being pursued by the government to join President Ruto and support his re-election bid, but that Kalonzo has refused.

According to Wamalwa, after the President realised that he has lost Mount Kenya, which was instrumental in his 2022 victory, and that the Nyanza region is not reliable, he has now turned to him and Kalonzo.

Wamalwa claimed that, based on their intelligence and statistics, President Ruto is projected to lose by about two million votes, contrary to his recent projection of a 2–3 million vote victory in 2027.

He said this is why the President is now seeking their support to bridge the gap and secure a win.

Wamalwa stated that he will not be pressured by the state to join the government and will continue working with his United Opposition allies in their quest for the top seat.

These remarks, however, appear to contradict his recent moves, where he was spotted with Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, a strong supporter of the current regime and the broad-based government, where he hinted at working together for Mulembe unity.

Over the past weekend, he also attended a function with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who urged him to ditch the opposition and join the government, saying he was ready to open doors for him to enter.

Wetang’ula also invited Wamalwa to join forces with himself, Wycliffe Oparanya, and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi to finally realise the long-discussed Mulembe unity, which has remained an unfulfilled political dream.

In December, during an interview with the same media station, he hinted at the same plot, stating that the president had been sending proxies to persuade him to join the government. He said that at one point, after the now Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale was reshuffled to the Environment and Forestry docket, he was offered the Defence Cabinet Secretary position but declined the offer.
