Wamalwa opens up on United Opposition’s plan for Ol Kalou by-election

By , March 30, 2026

Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has opened up on the United Opposition’s plan for the Ol Kalou by-election, which fell vacant on Sunday, March 28, after its MP died following a long battle with cancer.

While speaking during an X Space on Sunday night, March 29, 2026, the former defence cabinet secretary stated that just as they worked together in the previous three by-elections, they are going to use the same approach in Ol Kalou.

Wamalwa stated that, just as it was the case in the Malava by-election, where a Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate, Edgar Busiega, ceded ground for a Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) candidate, Seth Panyako, and supported him wholeheartedly, and in Mbeere North, where DCP stepped down for a Democratic Party (DP) candidate, Newton Karish, the same is going to take place in Ol Kalou.

According to him, they will approach it as a unit.

“For the old Kalou by-election, we are working together. You do recall we had 3 by-elections, and in Malava, DCP stood down for DAP-K,” Wamalwa said.

“The outspoken leader continued to state that unity is not an option but an imperative.”

David Njuguna’s death

This comes after the death of Ol Kalou Constituency MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, who succumbed to cancer while at Nairobi Hospital on Sunday, March 29, 2026. Immediately after his death, the National Assembly Speaker formed a nine-member committee to begin the funeral arrangements of the late David Njuguna, who was serving his third term in Parliament after being elected in 2013.

The funeral committee was led by Kinangop MP Kwenya Thuku, deputised by his Nyandarua counterpart Faith Gitau, and they are expected to liaise with the family in giving the late a befitting send-off.

“In this regard, I have appointed members to the Funeral Preparation Committee to liaise with the family and coordinate a befitting send-off for the late Hon. Kiaraho. The Member will lead the team for Kinangop, the Hon. Kwenya Thuku, MP, assisted by the Member for Nyandarua, the Hon. Faith Gitau, CBS, MP, and seven (7) other Hon. Members,” the statement said.
