Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has claimed that the county will continue to have the ruling party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), in charge of the gubernatorial seat when her term expires.

Waiguru, who was addressing the Kirinyaga County Grassroots Leaders’ Meeting at State House on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, stressed that her previous statements on the subject remain unchanged, adding that the next governor will be from the UDA.

“I said that the governor of Kirinyaga, and I am repeating because there are people who did not understand me, the next governor of Kirinyaga will be from UDA,” Waiguru said, in comments that seemed to emphasise her political clout in the county ahead of the next election in 2027.

Waiguru’s political card

Waiguru, who is in her second and final term as governor, used the occasion to mobilise grassroots leaders to stay with the ruling party, marking an early move to build alliances and influence post-election politics in Kirinyaga.

Waiguru’s sentiments also come as a reflection on her next political path as her tenure as governor comes to an end with her recent remarks eying national politics.

The governor has recently made remarks that were seen to position herself for the country’s second-highest office in the 2027 showdown.

Speaking to residents in Ngariama in the Gichugu constituency, Kirinyaga, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Waiguru urged the people of Mt Kenya to embrace pragmatic politics, insisting that alliances in Kenya are driven by interests rather than emotion.

“Politics is about interests, not a love affair,” Waiguru said, in remarks that appeared aimed at cooling the growing anti-government mood in parts of the region.

Her comments come amid rising political realignments in Mt Kenya, where Gachagua has emerged as a key opposition figure against Ruto after their fallout as the Democracy for the Citizens (DCP) chief, with other opposition figures strategising on making him a one-term president.
