United opposition top brass meet amid name formation plan
By Joel Masibo, September 8, 2025The United Opposition top leadership have hinted at coming up with a name for their political outfit that comprises different parties with an aim of competing against President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza regime in the 2027 presidential race.
Taking to his official X account on Monday, September 8, 2025, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Muyoka, pictured with the former Deputy President and the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and former Attorney General Justin Muturi, signalled at deliberating on a common name that will unify all the political outfits under the umbrella of the opposition.
In his brief message, Kalonzo Musyoka said: ”The name will come in time; and we are united.” The latest meeting bringing together the opposition chiefs comes at a time when there are ideological differences in running the outfit that have been reported.
Elsewhere, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, during a church service on Sunday, September 7, 2025, declared that, by the grace of God, Kalonzo would be the next president.
Earlier, the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Deputy party Leader Cleophas Malala had opposed the appointment of former UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi as Spokesperson and Head of Secretariat for the United Opposition.
However, in a quick change of mind, the former Kakamega Senator softened his stance against Dr Kituyi’s appointment, vowing to read from the same script as the rest of the top leaders in the opposition.
In a video posted on his Facebook account on Sunday, September 7, 2025, Malala explained that although he initially opposed the decision, he has now resolved to support it after consultations with DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua.
“Juzi, mmeona tumekuwa na shida kidogo. Wakati the United Opposition ilikuwa inachagua secretariats, principals wakachagua Mukhisa Kituyi. Mimi kibinafsi nikasema hapana, hii nafasi ipatiwe kijana. Kwa sababu vijana ndio wanafaa waweke moto,” he said.
However, Malala revealed that DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua intervened and convinced him to reconsider his stand. “Rigathi Gachagua akaniita, akaniambia Cleo, ata wewe unatetea vijana sana, lakini ata wazee wanataka kuwa pale kwa uongozi. Akanielezea kwa nini ikuwe Mukhisa. Mimi nikasema kwa sababu Riggy G amesema, mimi naunga mkono,” he added.
Kalonzo’s firm stance against the government
Maintaining his firm stand against the current regime, Kalonzo Musyoka has accused President William Ruto of failure to stabilise the economy and observe the rule of law.
”I have heard President Ruto say that his economic model works. But I ask, working for whom? Millions of Kenyans cannot afford a meal on the table. Our public universities are collapsing, and the dignity of being a student in this country has been reduced to misery. Education is a constitutional right. However, seeing Ruto and his newfound allies celebrating Katiba Day, I felt pity because he himself opposed this constitution. Kenyans, let us be clear: a constitution without constitutionalism is meaningless because the Bill of Rights affirms the dignity and freedoms of our people, which is why we firmly oppose political intolerance,” Kalonzo said on Friday, September 5, 2025.
