The united opposition has formally written to the Inspector General of Police, accusing the National Police Service of bias and failure to protect opposition leaders and supporters amid what it describes as a sustained campaign of violence and intimidation across the country.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) said opposition leaders plan to visit the Inspector General’s office on Friday, January 30, 2026, to lodge formal complaints and demand action over repeated attacks, some allegedly involving police officers or occurring under police watch.

The opposition said the planned visit is meant to address concerns over safety, accountability, and what it views as selective enforcement of the law, particularly against DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua and other opposition figures.
In the letter addressed to the Inspector General, the opposition explained the purpose of the visit and the concerns prompting it.

“I write to formally notify you that the leadership of the United Opposition will visit your office on Friday, 30th January 2026, at 10:00 a.m to officially raise serious complaints and engage in discussions on the way forward regarding the safety and security of opposition leaders and their supporters,” DCP’s statement reads.

The opposition said the decision follows months of unresolved reports of violence and harassment reported to police stations across the country.

“The visit is prompted by sustained attacks, harassment, intimidation, and violations of rights directed at opposition leaders and their supporters across the country,” the statement reads.

They accused the police of failing to investigate or communicate any outcomes despite multiple reports being filed.

“These incidents have been reported to various police stations and relevant commands; however, to date, no investigations, updates, or corrective actions have been communicated or undertaken by the National Police Service,” the statement reads.

The letter then lists 25 incidents dating back to November 2024, detailing attacks at funerals, church services, political meetings, rallies, and road convoys in counties including Kiambu, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Meru, Bungoma, Nairobi, Murang’a, and Narok. Several incidents allegedly involved teargas, live ammunition, destruction of vehicles, and attacks on women, children, clergy, and worshippers.

According to the opposition, the attacks intensified around events attended by or linked to Gachagua, including church services, party activities, and his return from the United States in August 2025.

The opposition said its engagement with the Inspector General is grounded in the constitutional duty of the police to act impartially.

“Given the constitutional mandate of the National Police Service to provide security impartially and protect all citizens regardless of political affiliation, the opposition leadership considers it necessary to seek direct engagement with your office to address these concerns and agree on appropriate remedial measures,” the statement reads.

The delegation expected to visit the Inspector General includes Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua, Justin Muturi, and Omingo Magara.

The opposition says it hopes the meeting will lead to accountability, protection of lives, and an end to what it describes as politically motivated violence.
