Sossion rubbishes claims that Ruto has lost support in Mt Kenya

Former nominated MP Wilson Sossion has dismissed claims that the President William Ruto’s support in the Mt Kenya region has plummeted ahead of his impending tour of the region.
The president recently hinted at the visit to the vote-rich region while updating on the status of the road infrastructure in the country during a meeting with the president of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina on Monday, March 17, 2025.
The trip, scheduled for the final week of March or early April, will be the president’s first development tour of the region since the impeachment of his estranged Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in 2024.
Speaking during a live interview on Thursday, March 20, 2025, Sossion dismissed claims the president has been abstaining from the region, as he reiterated his (Ruto’s) commitment to serving all Kenyans equally.
Mt Kenya visit
“The president committed and he has been travelling across Kenya. He has been in Western and Northern Kenya, Nairobi for a whole week and the Coast. He will be in Mt Kenya because he is the president and will visit the region. He has been in Embu and Meru which are part of the mountain,” he said.
On the prevailing political climate ahead of the visit, Sossion, who lauded the people of the mountain for voting overwhelmingly for Ruto, decrying an attempt by individual politicians to blackmail the president through selfish agendas, urging them to stop and let him be.

“What is happening is individual persons, not tribes, not regions but persons with selfish interests will like to blackmail the president for personal self-entitlement. It is actually blackmail on the president as people want to reduce the president to pamper them as individuals by using the name of a region. The president should be the president of everybody and the entire region of the country,” he said.
Sossion further asserts Ruto was voted for based on his agenda, emphasizing that the president has remained consistent in his quest to champion inclusivity and equality in his government.
“Kenyans came out to and voted for Ruto as individuals on the basis of his agenda including the people from the mountain. Their decision was informed by the communication with the people. The communication will be maintained. This is what should inform our politics and other progressive agendas of education and infrastructure,” the former KNUT boss stated.
Additionally, Sossion downplayed the notion that the head of state has long lost his hold of the Mt Kenya region.
Mountain gone?
“To try and say that Mt Kenya People are gone! Which figures are you using? Where have they gone have they gone out of Kenya? They are in Kenyan and are free to express themselves,” he insisted.

“The president has not dropped the ball in de-ethnicising the country and pushing the political agenda of inclusivity. The rollout of broad-based govt he has been deliberate. Trying to create that Mt Kenya is under attack will come out in the fullness of time. Ruto will not drop Mt Kenya, it’s an area of interest for him and will visit the area,” he opined.
Among the development projects scheduled in Ruto’s tour include the inspection of the ongoing construction of the Kenol-Marua Road and other projects in the larger Mt Kenya region.
