Sifuna says Kenya cannot endure another year of Ruto’s presidency
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said Kenya cannot sustain another year under President William Ruto, citing rising fuel costs and economic pressure on households.
Speaking at the Linda Mwananchi rally at Mazembe Grounds in Nakuru, Sifuna addressed supporters and criticised recent fuel price increases.
“Linda mwananchi, tunataka kuwalinda against Ruto. Wamekua wakitudanganya ati wako na mpango ya kureduce fuel lakini ni uongo tu!” he said.
The remarks followed a fuel price review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, which announced new maximum retail prices for the period between April 15 and May 14, 2026. Super petrol rose to Ksh206.97 per litre in Nairobi, while diesel increased to Ksh206.84. Kerosene prices remained unchanged.
Sifuna had earlier stated on X that the government had provided misleading information on fuel pricing, referencing earlier assurances that interventions would stabilise costs.
Economic impact and public response
The fuel price increase is expected to affect transport costs and the prices of goods and services. Households and businesses have raised concerns over the rising cost of living following the adjustments.
Sifuna linked the developments to broader economic challenges, stating that the impact is being felt across sectors. He attributed the situation to policy decisions and called for accountability in how fuel pricing is managed.

The government had previously indicated that measures, including fuel supply arrangements, were intended to cushion consumers from global price shocks. The latest adjustments have drawn attention to the effectiveness of those measures.
Political tensions and accountability issues
At the rally, Sifuna also addressed governance concerns, including the death of Albert Ojwang in police custody in June 2025. He stated that the incident marked a turning point in political relations.
“Siku ile Albert Ojwang aliuliwa, hiyo ndio ilikuwa mwisho wa mkataba wa UDA na ODM,” he said. “Ndio maana wanajaribu kunifukuza kama SG, kwa sababu nilisimama na Albert Ojwang.”
He further referenced the case of Brian Odhiambo Makori, whose body was recovered after he went missing in January 2025 following an encounter with officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service.
The remarks come amid internal discussions within the Orange Democratic Movement regarding party positions and leadership roles. Sifuna’s statements reflect ongoing political debate on economic management, accountability, and public service delivery.
