Sifuna: Nobody can kick me out of ODM

By , February 4, 2026

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has unequivocally declared that he is a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and that nobody can kick him out of the party.

Speaking during an interview with a local media station on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the ODM Secretary General, who months ago was staring at a possible ouster from both his position and the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), said there is nobody who can dare push him out of the Orange Party.

He said that he has no intention of ditching ODM, where he has held the secretary general position for the past nine years.

“I am in ODM, and nobody can kick me out of ODM. I have no intention of leaving ODM. I’ve said this publicly a thousand times. You don’t have to be an official of the party to be a member of the party,” he said.

His remarks come days after the reports surrounding his possible ouster from the ODM party subsided. Migori Senator Eddy Oketch, who had been set to present a motion seeking his removal, later withdrew the motion to give room for dialogue.

Raila Odinga’s widow, Ida Odinga, also weighed in during her late husband’s 81st posthumous birthday, urged the party to embrace dialogue instead of internal push and pull.

Siaya Governor James Orengo, on his side, warned that any attempt to remove Edwin Sifuna as Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General would destroy the party.

Orengo praised Sifuna’s leadership and loyalty to the party. He said ODM would not survive if some members succeeded in pushing Sifuna out of office. Orengo accused unnamed factions of undermining the party for personal gain and warned against betrayal of ODM’s founding principles.

“Nataka niwaakikishie ya kwamba, mtu akidhubutu kumtoa Sifuna katika ODM secretary general, that will be the end of ODM,” Orengo said. His remarks came amid speculation that some ODM leaders are exploring cooperation with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Rift in ODM

This comes at a time when there is a rift within the ODM party, with one faction led by Sifuna opposed to the direction the party is taking as it heads toward 2027. The Sifuna-led group is against the party’s continued bromance with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which saw the party’s Central Management Committee (CMC) mandate party leader Oburu Odinga to begin structured talks with UDA on pre-coalition agreements.
