Sifuna: I’m ready to step down as ODM secretary general if asked
By Ascah Mwango, July 23, 2025ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has said he would not hesitate to leave his position if asked to do so by the party leadership.
Speaking during a local TV interview on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Sifuna said he accepted the position with a sense of duty and would be equally willing to give it up if confidence in him is lost.
“If I were asked to step aside as SG of ODM, I would,” he said.
“Even when I became SG of ODM, I was asked, ‘If we gave you this position, would you be able to do it?’ and I said yes. If that same person calls me today and says, ‘Sifuna, I have lost confidence in your ability to do this job,’ this position is not mine. I would relinquish it without blinking.”
Despite this, Sifuna clarified that he is not considering resigning of his own volition, at least not yet. He said his commitment to the party and its members remains strong, even though he has openly disagreed with ODM’s growing cooperation with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
“The reason I will not resign yet is because I have not given up yet.I have not given up on members of the ODM,” he said.
He expressed continued belief in the party’s ideals and leadership, particularly that of party leader Raila Odinga.
“There is still belief and trust within the ranks of the party that Baba knows what is right for the people and that he will do the right thing,” Sifuna added.

“On the day that I give up, I will tell you. I will say it publicly that I have lost the battle to rescue this party and to bring it back to where it was.”
The Nairobi Senator also raised concern over the potential effects of ODM’s working relationship with the ruling coalition, saying it may create confusion among supporters and weaken the party ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“There is a lot of confusion,” he said.
Adding;
“I have told my party leader that there was a time when it was very easy to be the SG of ODM. What we agreed is that you can compromise on tactics, but you can never compromise on your values.”
