Senator Wafula Wakoli reveals leadership ambitions after replacing Khalwale as majority whip
By Luke Oluoch, December 3, 2025Bungoma senator Wafula Wakoli has spoken out after being named as the Senate’s new majority whip, terming it a solemn responsibility.
In a gracious acceptance speech on his media page on Tuesday, November 2, 2025, Wakoli stated that his appointment is a victory for the young person who believes in hard work and commitment to a cause.
The first-time senator, who succeeded Speaker Moses Wetang’ula as the Bungoma senator following the coming to power of Kenya Kwanza in 2022, committed to a firm and focused leadership as he starts his tenure as the majority chief strategist and majority chamber mobiliser.
Accept the responsibility
“I proudly take up the role of Majority Whip in the Senate—a responsibility I accept with humility and unwavering commitment,” he said.
“This is a victory for the people of Bungoma, the Kenya Kwanza family, and every young Kenyan who believes that hard work and consistency open doors.”

“I promise firm, fair, and focused leadership as we push forward the agenda of our nation,” he stated.

Among his roles are ensuring senators toe the party or coalition line on key votes and important mobilisation.
Wakoli officially assumed the role on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, after Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale was dewhipped.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the decision during a Senate sitting on Tuesday afternoon, December 2, 2025.
“A resolution was passed to remove Senate Majority Whip Senator Boni Khalwale MP, in accordance with Standing Order 225. The minutes further indicate that the majority party elected Senator David Wafula Wakoli, MP, to serve as the new Senate Majority Whip in his place,” Kingi said.
Defiance
The move came after Khalwale, alongside Eugene Wamalwa and George Natembeya, supported Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) candidate Seth Panyako in the Malava by-election, rather than backing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate David Ndakwa. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei criticised Khalwale’s actions.
“Senator Bonnie Khalwale of Kakamega County must pay for his political sins for challenging his sponsoring UDA party in the recent Malava constituency by-elections by campaigning against our candidate.”
“His contemptuous remarks against the UDA Party/Kenya Kwanza administration cannot go unpunished,” Cherargei said in a statement released on December 2.
