Senate Whip Wakoli signals sweeping reforms in Ford Kenya Party

Bungoma Senator and Senate Majority Whip Wafula Wakoli has signaled sweeping changes in the Ford Kenya party, aimed at strengthening the party and aligning it with its grassroots bases.

In a message on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Wakoli, a former youth leader, warned the party officials to brace for the new chapter of reforms in the party.

Wakoli is among the youthful leaders keen to inject fresh vigour into the party’s leadership and operations. He leverages his extensive experience as a longtime aide to party leader Moses Wetang’ula before declaring his interest in the Bungoma Senate seat, following Wetang’ula’s elevation to Speaker of the National Assembly.

Sweeping reforms

“In the issues of Ford Kenya, the people of this party must brace up for the changes we are now prepared to make and return Ford Kenya to its grassroots people. Everyone elected on this party ticket must work for the people.

As a senator, I will lead from the front in discharging my role,” he added.

“If you are an elected MCA, MP, or whatever position you hold in the party, you have to undertake your mandate. Everyone will have to carry their own cross and deliver to the people. We cannot direct all blame to the speaker even on issues and mistakes that are not his making,” he warned.

Wakoli’s remarks come after Speaker Moses Wetangula issued a stern warning about the impending party’s grassroots elections.

Wetang’ula warned party officials that they would not tolerate individuals joyriding in the party, stressing that the process would be conducted in a free and fair manner.

“To the people of Ford Kenya. You will be going to cast votes in the grassroots elections, and I want to reiterate the message that has been said here: there will be no joyriders in the party. The voting will be free and fair without favouring or discriminating against anyone,” he said.

The declaration came after the party’s shocker in the November 27 Chwele-Kabuchai by-election, where voters defied the party’s candidate for an independent candidate, Erick Wekesa.

The poll results have since elicited a serious inquiry into the workings of the party, with the voters’ rejection casting aspersions on its quest to exert further influence beyond its immediate strongholds
