Senate to resume sittings after long Christmas recess

According to a post shared by the Senate on their social media accounts on Monday, February 9, 2026, the upper House will begin its normal sittings on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 2:30 pm.
These breaks, according to parliamentary standing orders and Acts of Parliament, are essential, as they help MPs balance their parliamentary duties with grassroots engagements, ensuring that lawmakers remain connected to their constituents while advancing national legislation as mandated by the Constitution.
The first item on the order paper will be the motion for the approval of senators to serve on the Senate Business Committee.
The members include Sen. Ali Ibrahim Roba, EGH, MP; Sen. Fatuma Adan Dullo, CBS, MP; Sen. Wakili Hillary Kiprotich Sigei, CBS, MP; Sen. Mohamed Mwinyihaji Faki, CBS, MP; Sen. Veronica Maina, CBS, MP; and Sen. Shakila Abdalla Mohamed.
Other Senate business set for deliberation upon resumption includes the Wildlife Conservation and Management (Amendment) Bills, Senate Bills No. 46 and No. 49 of 2023, sponsored by Sen. Johnes Mwaruma, MP, and Sen. Lenku Ole Kanar Seki, MP, respectively, both at the second reading stage.
The Kenya National Council for Population and Development Bill (National Assembly Bills No. 72 of 2023), sponsored by the Senate Majority Leader, is also scheduled for second reading, alongside the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) (Amendment) Bill, Senate Bills No. 1 of 2024.
National assembly recess
Their National Assembly counterparts are also set to resume sittings, with key matters including the vetting of recently nominated ambassadorial heads to various countries. Among them is Ida Odinga, spouse of the late Raila Odinga, who was appointed by President William Ruto as Kenya’s United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) representative.
She is expected to appear before the National Assembly committee to assess her suitability for the role.
This follows a Naivasha retreat where MPs discussed their performance over the past year, upcoming parliamentary activities for 2026, and matters concerning their welfare and pensions.
