Senate saves Nyamira governor after 4th impeachment attempt

By , December 3, 2025

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has been saved by the Senate after a fourth impeachment attempt.

The case extended past the official working hours on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, where the Senate voted to uphold the preliminary objections raised by the governor’s legal team, led by Advocate Elias Mutuma.

They argued that the impeachment proceedings should be halted, stating that they had not met the threshold for impeachment by the County Assembly.

According to the legal team, there were technicalities, as the required two-thirds threshold was not met — out of 35 MCAs, only 23 voted.

The two sides argued all day, with senators holding divergent views on the preliminary objections. Senators such as Boni Khalwale wanted the impeachment motion to proceed.

At long last, the Senate voted, with 38 senators supporting the upholding of the preliminary objections, while 4 senators voted to allow the impeachment proceedings to continue.

The Senate Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed the outcome on his social media handles, announcing that Nyaribo remains the Governor of Nyamira after the County Assembly’s impeachment efforts were thwarted.

“Senators have tonight voted to uphold a preliminary objection raised by Hon Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo, Governor of Nyamira County, opposing his impeachment trial before the Senate on grounds that the County Assembly of Nyamira did not meet the required threshold in a vote that approved his impeachment. Consequently, the impeachment proceedings stand terminated, and Hon Nyaribo remains in office as Governor”

The motion

The impeachment motion was moved by MCA Bonyamatutu, who accused the governor of abuse of office, illegal appointments, failure to follow the law, and other issues.

MCAs Priscilla Nyatichi (Nominated), Julius Obonyo (Bobwagamo Ward), and Elijah Abere (Nominated), alongside Gladys Moraa, who were to serve as witnesses, disowned letters they claim were written to the County Assembly Speaker Thadeus Nyabaro, allowing voting by proxy.

Which lead to the filling of the priminary objections.

Nyaribo follows the path recently taken by Kericho Governor Erick Mutai, who was also saved by the Senate on similar preliminary objections when it emerged that the required two-thirds threshold was not met. Isiolo Governor was likewise saved by the Senate on similar grounds.
