Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango has hit out at Governor Anne Waiguru, dismissing her recent apology to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as a calculated political tactic rather than a sincere gesture.

Speaking during a presser on May 14, 2026, Murango argued that the Governor lacks the mandate to offer such apologies on behalf of the government, noting that there is an official government spokesperson and a President who was personally involved in the matters concerning the former Deputy President.

He suggested that Waiguru’s sudden change of heart is motivated by a realisation that “the ground is bad” and she is now seeking a safe political landing as her influence wanes.

“Sisi hatuko tayari kupokea huu msamaha wako gavana waiguru unaweza upeleka mahali pengine kwa sababu wakati alikuwa anang’atuliwa mwenye alikuwa anaongea vibaya mno,” Murango stated.

“kwa sasa anakuja kusema anatuomba msamaha, mtu aliyeridhi aliyenukuwa anafanya mpango kichini chini gizani kumridhi ndugu yake. Kitu ya kwanza ningemwambia gavana huo msamaha kwanza yeye hana uwezo kwa sababu ni gavana pekee yake wa Kirinyanga serikali iko na msemaji wa serikali na iko na rais mwenye alihusika pakubwa katika mambo hayo. Lakini gavana wangu leo nataka nimwelekeze mahali anaweza enda kutoa msamaha,” Murango said.

He further claimed that when the former Deputy President was being ousted, Waiguru was among his harshest critics, and her current attempt at reconciliation is merely a response to finding herself in a difficult political position where “nothing is holding”.

Murango urged the Governor to stop the politics and focus on finishing her term by working for the people of Kirinyaga. He warned that her time in leadership is nearing its end and advised her to consider what legacy she will leave behind.

Waiguru apology

Kamau’s remarks come days after Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru apologised on behalf of President William Ruto’s government over the political fallout linked to the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Waiguru spoke on Monday, May 11, 2026, during the launch of the Ksh200 million Mwea Integrated Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project in Kandongu. The remarks came amid lingering anger across the Mt Kenya region more than a year after MPs voted to remove Gachagua from office in late 2024.

Addressing residents, Waiguru acknowledged the frustrations still being felt on the ground.

“I have heard you. I cannot pretend that I have not, because I also live here,” she said.

She went further to offer an apology, while maintaining that her county government was not involved in the impeachment process.

“The county government was not involved; we were still here at the grassroots. The action took place in Parliament. However, I want to say that if you were deeply hurt, and since I am part of this government, then for collective responsibility, let me apologise. Please receive my apologies.”
