Scrap senate, reduce number of legislators, says MP
A Member of Parliament has called for the reduction of salaries paid to elected leaders.
North Imenti MP Raheem Dawood said this will go a long way in reducing the public wage bill.
Dawood further called for the reduction of the number of MPs and scraping of the Senate altogether saying monies saved from such a move ought to be channelled to other critical government services.
Cost of living The MP’s remarks come at a time when the government is facing serious attacks from the public over the high cost of living.
For several weeks, the country has witnessed anti-government protests largely spearheaded by Generation Z, comprising university and college students.
A move by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to increase salaries paid to State Officers backfired last week following serious backlash from Kenyans.
SRC was forced to withdraw the gazette notice that had awarded the pay rise to the state officers, including Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, MPs, Senators, governors and MCAs
